I started a club last year called the "Girlfriends" Club. We go to nursing homes and mentor to those seniors who haven't had visitors in years or have no families at all. Each resident is paired with a "Girlfriend" with similars likes or interests. We create a family circle for the resident by incorporating our own families into their lives. Where once they had no families, they now have daughters, grandchildren, nieces, nephews and all the joys of being a part of a closeknit family. Once a "Girlfriend" is assigned to a resident, we become their family for "LIFE". I started with 5 of my friends and have grown to over 40 members. I have "Girlfriends" in 2 nursing homes in the District and now working on establishing a 3rd. My goal is to have "Girlfriends" clubs in every nursing home in the U.S. so that no senior ever has to be alone. There are a lot of illnesses that kill seniors; most people don't realize that "LONLINESS" is a killer. My motto is "The REST of your life.... should be the BEST of your life.

In 2001 a friend of mine and I came up with the concept of R.O.K.S. - Raising Our Kids Solo, a single parent support group. After countless conversations about how challenging it is being a single parent and not finding any programs or services for the WORKING single parent R.O.K.S. was born out of necessity. Our motto is "Single by circumstance, Parents by choice". The mission of R.O.K.S. is to provide resources to educate, inform and empower the single parent as well as dispel negative stereotypes that society has placed on the single parent family.

I am excited to say that I think this idea is great news. Often individuals don't watch or listen to the news because it is depressing. Thank you for this and I will be sure to share this opportunity to share what is good occuring in our communities with others. Thank you again. Vanetta J. I recently been selected as a Modern Day Technology Leader at the 24th Annual Black Engineer of the Year Award Conference held in Baltimore, Md.This award is for young men and women pursuing careers in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math. I am an Nuclear Engineer for Northrop Grumman in Newport News, Va. I turned down a full scholarship to play basketball at University of Virginia at Wise but I ended up pursuing my passion in engineering. Being the only family member in my family with an college degree has been very challenging but by the strong support of family I was able to obtain my degree. I am currently starting an Crime Awareness Walk in Hopewell, Va in which is my hometown. Last year there were 3 young brother that lost their life to gun violence. I am going to try and help the city out by starting this crime walk. I hope to inspire my community and helping the younger generation in the area to achieve their dreams and goals.

Eleanor is giving, and a very caring person. In October 2009 I was considered homeless. Although I did have a home that I was suppose to be renting the house was found to have a lot of horrible issues that didn't allow me to live there with my family because of my health problems. I was living from one place dragging my daughter and 21mo. old granddaughter with me. Eleanor called me and opened her doors to me and my family for 3months at no cost. She would not take money for rent, grocery or utilities. she told us that we were at home and treated us as if we were her biological family. Although she is a widow herself with only one income, her faith in God encouraged me to hold on to God's word. When I finally found another home she went into my previous bedbug infested house where there was also mold and assisted me with throwing away everything while suffering with asthma. She is a great friend and I truly thank God for her. There are friends and then there is Eleanor.

Remembering their roots, alumni of the HBCU, Tennessee State University sharing the common bond of being initiated into Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated through the Alpha Psi chapter celebrated 10 years of sisterhood in October 2009. Embracing the foundation of their alma matter and their sorority, ladies of the Y2Kute, Fall 1999 line made being of service part of their 10 year celebration. Acting on their own accord as individuals not in conjunction with the sorority or university, these ladies donated over $1400 to chromes disease research through their participation in the July 2009 CCFA, Nashville chapter's Take Steps Walk in memory of deceased alumna who also was initiated with them. In October 2009, they presented the Pearl Cohn Ninth Grade Academy in Nashville, Tennessee with $130 for magazine subscriptions and donated over 200 grade level appropriate books and videos to the library, resulting in local press coverage. A decade ago, the Ninth Grade Academy's physical location was a middle school in which these ladies provided a tutoring program through their sorority. In February of 2010 they contributed $400 TSU Brick Campaign which goes towards TSU scholarships, and donated$440 to the Red Cross for Haiti Relief Efforts. Their common bond is rooted from their collegiate experience, both TSU and their sorority encourage being of service. These ladies hold true their roots.

I encourage my daughter in 2005 (Kendra) to buy a home after living in a apartment for ten years. Well she purchase as new house in the City of Baltimore after she purchase the house the neighbors was surprise on how she decorate the outside her home. The neighbors would come to her to get advise on how they could fix up there homes. She(Kendra)gave one neighbor her electrian, another her bricklayer, another her carpenter, and told them to buy there materials after they received there estimates from the constructor. The neighbors in her block would stop by when they need something done outside their house or inside their house. One day three of the neighbors came to her looking for what type of wood would look good on the floor, and a cabinet to put in the dining room (Kendra) took them shopping to look for the things they needed for their home. So, most of the neighbors still consult with her about what they need to upgrade their homes. Her new project is helping the neighbor to complete their unfinish basement. This is the mother of Kendra.

I am blessed to have many incredible people in my life, but Charles is among the most influential. This man literally "oozes" life. He is a retired campus President from a community college, just outside of Houston who constantly encourages others seek the best in everyone, help them develop their gifts and talents while doing the same for themselves. He has spent over 25 years loving people that others would ignore.
